Season Four - Week #7 - Entry #7
My Best Friend
This is my personal Best Friend Theory, based on uppity scientific and mathematical principles. This categorization seems to fit in my life, I'm curious how it fits for some of your experiences... This list is certainly not exhaustive, and I invite you to add your types in the comments!
The first kind of best friend is your double. Together you either make an incredible team, or a Mexican standoff. Any difference between the two of you and it's a major puzzle to be deciphered, because there are so few differences compared to the average friendship. Your "twin" friend will always be the one who you know best, because, well, they're like you. A friendship with a double is the strongest, and the hardest. Every difference between you can become a tailspin of misunderstanding. Trust is essential. Trust, and admitting that however similar you are, you don't know them well enough to read their mind every time. Ricki is my double, and the only true double I've ever found. (The next closest to this of my friends is Lisa.) Doubles are rare and precious - so don't let combined weaknesses topple what you've built.
The second kind of best friend is the opposite. The opposite is the indecipherable mystery, the learning experience. They see their choices in an entirely different way, as well as having fundamental personality differences. Introvert vs. Extrovert. Artistic vs. Scientific. Logical vs Emotional. Often when you first meet an opposite, you either dismiss them, love them, hate them, or feel some combination of the above. You may always have a bit of a love/hate relationship, and it takes work. Opposites can sometimes be horribly frustrating, and you might often find yourself telling them that you "just don't get it." But the mistakes will be different, the successes will be different, and observing each other can help you build a stronger decision-making process... I have a few opposites, but Roberta is the best one.
The third kind of best friend is the complement. A complement is like an opposite without the mystery. Where the differences with an opposite can be frustrating, the dissonance with a complement creates harmony. There is something incredibly unique about a strong friendship with a complement. When you are being pessimistic, she is the optimist and won't back down - then it can go vice versa. Your skills and approach to life are complementary, one is indecisive where the other is a quick decision maker, one is judgmental where the other is forgiving. The balance that is struck is different than with any other kind of friend. These kind of friendships last the longest. My main complement is Jessie, but she is by far not the only one. (Shelley, Linda, and others are all complements for me.) Complements enrich your life because these friendships are a little easier, they will form a fierce bond of love and trust between people. Just don't ever take them for granted, because one day you might find yourself off balance and with only your fundamental opposite and the person with all your weaknesses to offer you advice!
The fourth kind of best friend is the wildcard. Absolutely nobody would see this coming. It's like mixing up silly putty and sand. It looks really weird, but there's a cool texture and you just have to play with it. You meet a person and in spite of there being few essential commonalities, something just clicks. Suddenly you find yourself going to events and doing things you have never done before, and having the time of your life. Wildcards are world expanders. The friendships are tenuous, sometimes short lived, sometimes eventually developing on better acquaintance into one of the other types. But boy, it's a wild ride of crazy when you go for it all the way. You may be friends with someone for a few months or years or what seems like forever, but you'll probably never forget it as long as you live. (Garrett, Mark W., Janta, Soleil, and many others in my past fall into this category.)
If you have all the different colors of personality together, you get an amazing, well-rounded mix of experiences.
I took a bye last week for the topic of "Urban Legends" because I didn't have time to write something good, which was partially because I had too many ideas. I'll save some of those for Blogathon next summer. Come say hello if you're visiting from LJ Idol, and everyone tell me what you think of my four types...
